West Gate Tunnel Project - monthly progress photography

We’re grateful to be collaborating with the West Gate Tunnel Project to capture their monthly construction progress. We’ve been able to capture the project as it unfolded from the turning of the first sod to now moving closer to completion.

These stills have been really exciting to shoot, as there’s heaps of intrigue in the architectural design. There’s the fascinating cross-hatched dome that opens up at the entryway of the tunnel and the brilliant orange lights that line the ramp to the new elevated freeway. These features make the creative process seamless, as when the source material is already of interest to the eye, the shooting process becomes about making all of its details shine.

We’ve captured each of these elements a number of ways and a number of times through varying stages of construction. I love how the entrance feature shines in bright morning sunshine. The shadows echo through the metal weaving and the sun frames it as spectacular as it feels. There are lots of different ways to capture a structure like this, so when the light is as beautiful as it was on this day, our photographers can get really creative and find interesting angles to showcase its details.

My personal favourite feature is the orange feature lights lining the road, recreating the feeling of an airport runway. These look spectacular in daylight, lining the curves of the road, the orange accent complimenting the clear blue sky perfectly.

Recently, our team was on site for a night shoot to capture these lights as they turned on for the first time. With Melbourne’s current wintry weather afoot, we were worried this shoot may be affected by rain, however our team faced perfect night conditions and with access to this area before its opened to the public, were able to snap some really beautiful imagery for the team at the West Gate Tunnel Project.
