FPV Drone - Footscray Hospital for VHBA

We recently had the privilege of being able to fly our FPV drone through the new Footscray Hospital to highlight the design, details and bring the community into this new exciting piece of local infrastructure. How do we prepare for such a large shoot?

To prepare for a shoot like this, a recce was key. We toured the site with our client; taking in where the project is in terms of progress, the key design features, but also to hear first hand from the client what excites them about the project; what are they itching to showcase, what design elements make their eyes light up, what are they most proud of? This helps frame what we can capture, and helps us tailor our shots to focus on those details they really care about.

The recce also puts us directly into the site, allowing us to flag anything in the areas the client wants shot that may impact the drone’s ability to fly and therefore any safety concerns. A key aspect our client wanted us to capture was a beautiful void in the central green space which looked down onto the carpark. Immediately, our drone team pitched the idea to fly through this gap, up into the greenery

We took a 360 camera with us as a reference and with the hospital floorplans, our drone team drew out our flight paths. The flight paths shape our shotlist, creating a guide of what and how the drone pilot will shoot. From the recce we knew what to shoot, but through the shotlisting and flight path maps, our drone team could lock in the how.

Completing this level of pre-production saves an immense amount of time on set. It allows our pilots to concentrate on what matters while they fly, being safety and with aesthetics in mind. Even down to a much more minor scale, making sure we are prepared for set saver us time and drone battery life.

We’re so proud of how these shots came together. Here is the edit that the Victorian Health Building Authority put together of our vision.

The new Footscray Hospital will open to patients in early 2026.
